Privacy
Last updated 9 October 2026
The Slow Cup is a small, independent editorial publication. We try to collect as little personal data as possible, and this policy explains plainly what we do collect, why, and what your rights are. It is written to meet the EU GDPR, the UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, and to be sensible for visitors elsewhere.
The data controller is Embrace Changes Company, trading as The Slow Cup, Chamber of Commerce (KvK): 78760925, established in the Netherlands. You can contact us at hello@theslowcup.com.
We have not appointed a Data Protection Officer, as we are not legally required to do so.
You can read everything on The Slow Cup without creating an account or telling us who you are. We do not use analytics, advertising or social-media tracking. Our pages, images and typefaces are all served from our own website; no third-party font or script providers receive your visit.
When you load a page, our hosting provider automatically receives the technical details that any web server needs in order to respond: your IP address, browser type, the page requested, the time of the request and the referring page. This information is used to deliver the site, keep it secure and defend it against automated abuse. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure, reliable website (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). The hosting provider may retain technical and security logs according to its applicable retention practices.
If you choose to subscribe, we ask only for your email address. We use it for one purpose: to send you The Slow Cup Letter. Subscriptions are processed by our newsletter provider, Kit (kit.com), which stores your email address on our behalf and sends the email on our behalf. We do not add it to any other list, sell it or share it for marketing. Legal basis: your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you may withdraw at any time using the unsubscribe link in every email or by contacting us. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that happened before you withdrew it.
If you take part in our invitation-only test of the Slow Cup Moment reflection and choose to answer the optional feedback questions at the end, we save your answers to those questions, any suggestion you write, which Slow Cup Moment you received and the date of submission. We use this only to improve the experience. We do not save your answers to the reflection questions themselves, and we do not ask for your name or email address. Your feedback is not linked to any newsletter subscription. Please do not include personal details in written suggestions; if you do, we may be able to recognise you from them. Feedback is stored with our backend hosting provider and can be read only by us.
To prevent spam, we briefly derive a one-way, scrambled code from your connection's IP address that changes every hour. It is never stored with your feedback and is deleted within about an hour. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in improving The Slow Cup (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Each feedback entry is deleted automatically 90 days after submission. We keep only anonymised monthly totals (counts of answers per Slow Cup Moment, without written suggestions) for longer-term research.
There is no contact form on the website. If you email us, we will use your name, email address and the content of your message to reply to you. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in responding to correspondence, or steps taken at your request. We normally retain correspondence for up to 12 months after our last exchange, unless we need to keep it longer for legal, administrative or legitimate business purposes.
The Slow Cup does not set analytics, advertising or preference cookies. Our hosting provider's network may set a single short-lived, strictly necessary security cookie to distinguish real visitors from automated traffic, and the site keeps a temporary, non-identifying note of your scroll position in your browser so the back button works properly. Because we use only strictly necessary technologies, no cookie banner is shown. Full details are in our Cookie Policy.
We do not sell personal data.
We may use trusted service providers to operate and secure The Slow Cup, including website hosting, backend hosting for beta feedback, and Kit (kit.com) for our newsletter. These providers may process limited personal data on our behalf only where necessary to provide their services.
We may also disclose personal data where required by law or where reasonably necessary to protect our rights, our readers or the public.
We will update this Privacy Policy if our use of service providers materially changes how your personal data is processed.
Our website is delivered through a content-delivery network with servers in multiple locations, so the technical connection data described above may be processed outside the country from which you are visiting, including outside the UK and the European Economic Area. Where personal data is transferred internationally, we rely on the safeguards applied by our hosting provider.
Under EU and UK data protection law you have the right to:
To exercise any of these rights, email hello@theslowcup.com. We will respond within one month. We may ask you to confirm your identity first.
You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority. In the Netherlands this is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl). If you live elsewhere in the EU or in the UK, you may also contact the data protection authority of the country where you live or work.
The Slow Cup is written for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has subscribed, contact us and we will remove the address.
The website is served only over encrypted connections (HTTPS), with security headers configured to protect against common browser-based attacks. We collect very little data, which is itself the most effective protection. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
We will update this page if our practices change, for example if we change service providers or add new features. The date at the top shows when this policy was last revised.
