The Slow Cup

The Slow Practice

Small ways to come back to yourself.

You don't need to change your whole life to change how you experience it. The Slow Practice is a collection of simple ways to pause, breathe, reflect, move and make a little more room for yourself.

A pause — 3 min

Three slow breaths.

The shortest practice we know, and often the only one you need. You can do it right here, before you read anything else.

01 — Pause

Pause

Short practices for the moments when life feels full — a breath, a cup, a few minutes away from the screen.

  • A pause — 3 min

    Three slow breaths

The shortest practice we know, and often the only one you need. Three breaths, taken properly.

    1. Let your shoulders drop.
    2. Inhale slowly, through the nose.
    3. Exhale for a little longer than you took to breathe in.
    4. Do that twice more, without hurrying it.
  • A pause — 5 min

    The five-minute tea ritual

Make a cup. Put the phone somewhere else. Be here for five minutes and let that be the whole of it.

    1. Put the kettle on and stay in the room while it boils.
    2. Leave your phone in another room, face down.
    3. Hold the cup. Notice the warmth before the taste.
    4. When your mind wanders off, let it come back to the cup.

If this one stays with you, The five-minute ritual explores it further in the Journal.

  • A pause — 3 min

    Feel your heart beating

A quiet practice of listening inward — to the rhythm that has been with you all along.

    1. Feel your heart beating, deep inside your chest.
    2. Feel its infinite rhythm.
    3. Feel the beat, listen to it.
    4. Far away, yet so close, deep down inside.
    5. Stay with it.
    6. That's you right there.
    7. Alive.

02 — Reflect

Reflect

Ways of noticing what is happening underneath the noise. A question, a page, an honest check-in with yourself.

  • Reflection — 3 min

    A question for today

One question, sat with rather than solved. Answer it on paper, or simply let it follow you around for the afternoon.

    1. Find a page, or don't.
    2. Read the question once, slowly.
    3. Wait for the second answer — the first is usually the tidy one.

“What do I need less of today?”

If this one stays with you, A letter about noticing explores it further in the Journal.

  • Attention — 10 min

Ten minutes away from your phone

A small attention reset. Not a detox, not a rule to keep — just ten minutes of undivided somewhere else.

    1. Put the phone in a drawer, or another room.
    2. Do one ordinary thing: wash up, walk, look out of a window.
    3. Let it be boring. Boredom is where thinking starts.

If this one stays with you, When did being busy become normal? explores it further in the Journal.

03 — Move

Move

Gentle ways back into the body, for when thinking has been doing all the work. Nothing strenuous, nothing to achieve.

  • Movement — 5 min

    A short body reset

A few minutes of gentle movement, mostly to find out where you have been holding the day.

    1. Stand up. Let the arms hang. Roll the shoulders back, twice.
    2. Lengthen through the spine and let the jaw unclench.
    3. Fold forward softly, knees loose, and stay for three breaths.
    4. Come up slowly and notice what has changed.
