The mind that will not settle

Why a restless mind is usually not a problem to fix, and what tends to help more than trying harder.

The instruction to clear your mind is one of the least helpful ever given. Minds do not clear. They produce thoughts the way lungs produce breath, and the demand for silence usually generates more noise, not less.

Less clearing, more widening

A more forgiving aim is space. Not the absence of thoughts, but a little more room around them — enough that a worry can be a worry rather than the entire weather of the afternoon.

You are not trying to stop the thinking. You are trying to stop standing so close to it.
